Heyyy y’all! My name is Maheshwari and I’m a c Heyyy y’all! My name is Maheshwari and I’m a certified English Teacher + SAHM mom of 5. I’d love to see you over at @chattingwithchai to talk more about different ways to support your kids as they learn through play in elementary school.
_____ By popular demand, I’ve collated a list of books that you can read from newborn till preschool. I started with Kinder chapter books and got SO many requests for storybooks and picture books that started getting this list together. Please know that there are hundreds of great books out there; these just happen to be some of the titles we’ve read and loved. I know there are a ton of books that I missed but Instagram only allows you to upload ten frames in-feed! Let me know in the comments what are some of your kids’ or your favorite story and picture books!

_____ I read a post about how reading books was not enough to change. And while I agree, I do think books are a good start. If you’re not sure how to teach your kids or even what to teach your kids about racism and the civil rights movement of the 1950s, I think this is a good start. MLK Day is just around the corner and I think it’s so apropros to learn about how we, as a country, got to this point. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was a great orator. He was a powerful civil rights activist that marched the capital grounds PEACEFULLY. Organizing thousands to come without the power of social media, without text messages or hashtags. He lead people to change laws and make a real difference in the way the country works. THAT is the kind of change and peace we need at the Capital. Not the coup that happened yesterday. Make sure to check out the post and all the fun activities you can do for MLK Day with your kids!

_____ I once had a friend that was married before me. I was single and didn’t have any love on the horizon. I asked her to join me and some girls for Sunday boozy brunch; she declined, saying that she has a family meeting Sunday mornings with her husband and puppy. I always thought it was weird, like what the hell do you need to have a meeting for? And why do you want your dog there? Fast forward ten years, here I am having a Sunday meeting with my husband, kids, and dog (and cat but she’s moody so ehhhh). Is family meetings a thing in your house? I’ve just shared an entire outline with agenda ideas and a free printout that we use in all of our meetings. We actually use it on our iPads so make sure to check my stories to see what that looks like! I’ve actually got a highlight shared from our previous meetings from the earlier years where I share the fun coloring pages our kids have done!

We’re ending the year with some fun book suggestions for 2021. Last week, I outlined some books for K-2nd grade; naturally, this week, I’m sharing some fun chapter books for 3-6th. Included are classics, variety of topics, and of course, diverse characters and writers. I’ve also started assembling my own 2021 reading list and may share that in my stories next year. Until then, stay safe and have fun playing 😀

Like, I WAS READY. I got our crafts ready, a list of elementary Christmas books out, holiday sensory boxes prepped, and my worksheets and coloring pages printed. Honestly, I don’t know how it happened and came together, but here we are, just sitting on the couch watching Disney movies and not doing anything! HAAAAAA My boys are at that age where they are really into cutting, pasting, and tracing. Like, there is a real obsession with staying on the line and purple glue. So much so that now my diaper bag is cut and sticky. But, I digress. Tracing is one of those things that are quintessential for children. Honestly, I’m not really sure how to teach the actual act of writing without at least reviewing tracing. Not only does tracing worksheets help with practicing fine motor skills but it strengthens dexterity, which really helps with Dysgraphia. Oh, and by the way, these winter themed worksheets that focus on tracing are ABSOLUTELY FREE. 🥰
Merry Christmas from me and mines to you and yours Merry Christmas from me and mines to you and yours ♥️

If you’ve seen my stories, you know that my library is two floors and I rotate between the same yoga pants and leggings. It’s the best physical thing I have- the books. The leggings are in the top 5, though. When I first got married, I was convinced I was going to be a fashion blogger. We got a customized closet made so that I could walk into the room and see all the clothes I have.
Oh my, how things have changed! Now, we have more books and kids than anything else- haha! But I digress. I’ve just always had a passion to read and I’m very blessed that my husband encourages my love for buying books and not being able to finish them and still buying more. Loljk. I read them.. most of the time 😉 I do get asked a lot of what book suggestions I have. And while I had a comprehensive list of literature from teaching high school and PMA books adults can grow from, I really didn’t have a solid library for kids besides baby board books when my kids were born. Over the years, though, I’ve done lots of research on decodables and chapter books to read aloud in Kindergarten and early elementary. I’m separating the list into two- chapter books for kindergarten through second grade and then another post will cover chapter books for third grade through sixth. I have included lexile levels (which is a fancy way of saying reading level) and grade levels to make it easier to find out what you‘ll want to be reading with your child. Please keep in mind that lexile levels and grade levels are mere SUGGESTIONS and should be taken with a grain of salt. There is no hard and fast rule of what you should read. My only suggestion is to read things that help build confidence and interest/passion in different subjects. This book list include classics that I loved to read growing up, different themes relevant to kids, diverse authors, and series that are captivating! Tell me, what are some favorite books that your kids love?
GUYS GUYS GUYS. We’re down to the single digits GUYS GUYS GUYS. We’re down to the single digits till Christmas Morning! Only 9 more sleeps!! (Okay, I’m not good at math so don’t even come for me if that’s wrong) I’d like to brag about how I’m done shopping and I have everything wrapped and labeled. But that would be a lie. I actually rewashed a load of laundry this morning and ate an old poptart that I found in the bottom of the van for breakfast. But I mean that has nothing to do with this picture so I’m just going to move along, LOL 😆 I’ve got some crafts and activities together for the kids this winter break. And if you’re looking for something to do with your kids this holiday break so you can relax on the couch and watch insta stories and tiktoks, take a look at my latest post and product! 4 different Writing prompts for this season, including the quintessential letter to Santa. All differentiated with picture prompts, sentence starters, visual organizers, sloppy copies, and final drafts. With that said, I’m off to buy some more pop tarts that I can hide on the floor of my van. Bye! ♥️
This is not a beautiful picture. It’s not staged This is not a beautiful picture. It’s not staged properly and doesn’t have that ‘Gram finesse. But because of this box and others like it, my kids did not ask for the TV or iPad even once. They created using their hands and minds. They used their words to tell stories. They collaborated by asking for help and sharing ideas. They laughed and giggled. They played for the whole afternoon. But don’t get it twisted. They made a mess and someone started crying. I still have fake snow all over my playroom. Watch my stories and you’ll see what I’m talking about!
